On the cover: Unrepaired DNA double-strand breaks cause chromosome breakage and fragmentation. Chromosome fragments that do not contain a centromere cannot attach to the mitotic spindle and would segregate inappropriately during mitosis, potentially causing genomic instability. However, Royou et al. (pp. 235–245) now show that chromosome fragments can properly segregate in mitosis but rely on DNA tethers to maintain a connection with a centromere-containing sister chromosome. These DNA tethers enable the proper segregation of sister fragments to opposing poles during mitosis, thus preventing the production of daughter cells with chromosomal instability. The cover image shows a 20 s time lapse of a cell in anaphase, with a DNA tether shown in red and chromosomes in blue.
