Volume 140, Issue 1
On the cover: In eukaryotes, noncoding microRNAs (miRNAs) can inhibit translation of target mRNAs via binding to complementary sequences in the target, and miRNAs thus control gene expression at the posttranscriptional level. In this issue, Khraiwesh et al. (pp. 111–122) show that in the moss Physcomitrella patens miRNAs can also regulate gene expression at the transcriptional level as they find that miRNA:target-RNA duplexes direct DNA methylation and transcriptional silencing. On the cover, this process is captured in a cartoon, showing leafy structures of the moss, where a gang of “Mafia” type miRNAs literally silence a DNA molecule by cementing it in methylation marks.
